Snap to it! Shutter speed and the dark side

Snap to it | October 29, 2013 | By

And now for a photography hiatus from food…

You could say I’m good with deadlines, or that I’m bad with them, depending on how you look at it. When I was in school I’d say I was bad with them, because I was the one doing the assignment the night before, and cramming all night for the exams. But I always hit the deadline. Luckily spelling counts, but sleep doesn’t.

When I started working, my living close to the deadline actually became an advantage, because I started work at a consulting firm where every other person there lived life like I did. This meant I didn’t flinch when I had to stay there all night, make sure the copy place was open at 5am, and meet with the client at 8. Yeah, those were good times…

But every so often, I get bitten by a deadline when I get it wrong, like with the return of Snaptoit, the amazing Cinnamon’s photography challenges, open to one and all.

For this one, I had a whole month to complete the challenge, but I had it in my head that the deadline was Oct 31 when it was actually a few days before that. The challenge was about a fast shutter speed. When I was reminded by my sweet fellow competitor Midwesternbite (check her cute doggy submissions here) that I messed up, it was dark. This doesn’t work so well for fast shutter speed. Here was my best attempt:

Spooksville

Spooky, but not really freeze-motion-awesome like I was going for. Not one to give up, I submitted my crappy-halloweenish shot, “snapped” at my husband due to my short tempered frustration at not having enough light, and tried again today, deadlines be darned. I suited up my little dark side obsessed Vader and had at it. Here’s the one I entered.

Vader

Is he throwing the candies, or using the force to get as many as he can?

He says Darth Vader doesn’t smile.

I was quite pleased with these tardy results! Check out Cinnamon’s tutorial and give it a try yourself! Or you can just use the force to get it done, your choice, but on time may you always be (Laugh it up, fuzzball). Happy Halloween!

You have no idea how much I love this. Seriously. I LOVE Star Wars. Love love love. I may be able to recite the original three by heart. I may have pictures of my kid from his first Christmas playing with a Princess Leia in the gold bikini ornament. I may have bought my kid a storm trooper plate to eat off of. That’s just the beginning. These pictures are AWESOME!!!! May the force of shutter speed be with you.

It’s my little Darth Vader there who’s the fanatic! I’m basically keeping our neighbourhood video store in business by renting them again and again. He saw one kids’ book with a light saber on the front and he was hooked. Now I have to somehow figure out how to make two cakes for his birthday – Jabba The Hutt and Jar Jar (one evil and one good). I have to admit I like it too though!! (Green icing, here I come)

Crap, I’m more of a student with photography than a teacher! Maybe hop on over to see Cinnamon at http://www.eatpraytri.com if you’re having trouble. But for this one the key is to focus on the shutter speed setting and make it super fast, where you have quite a bit of external light. Good luck!!!

Thanks! I need to turn him away from the dark side with a Luke costume from your most recent post – Joanna, you have to check it out if you’re a Star Wars fan! (Who isn’t???)

I love this idea! So cool!!! And I like how he is almost smiling in one near the end. He can’t handle the excitement of the candy! 🙂

Thanks! Yes, I had to bribe him with a fruit rollup and mini chocolate bar to do the shoot, so near the end he was getting closer to his reward! 🙂
